19 January 2020 — Toyo Keizai Online Publishes a piece headlined "Why Naoya Inoue has declared he will retire in 2028". Inoue was born on 10 April 1993, so he turns 35 in April 2028. The "retire at 35" plan dates from here, and he has restated it repeatedly since.

19 May 2025 — theWORLD, reporting a Ring Magazine interview On how much career is left: "I think it will be about three more years. Including this year." Counting 2025, that points at 2027.

2 May 2026 — Tokyo Dome Inoue beats Junto Nakatani on a 12-round unanimous decision to defend the undisputed super-bantamweight championship (full result). He remains unbeaten at 33-0 with 27 knockouts.

7 May 2026 — Nippon TV's "news zero" (reported by Daily Sports) Asked about the age-35 plan, Inoue backed his younger self's judgement, then set the real condition: "If a compromising mindset creeps in, I think I would quit even before I turn 35." On moving up to featherweight: "It's in my thinking, but when, and whether I really take that on, I need to talk through properly with the chairman and my father — it carries danger."

12 May 2026 — RONSPO His father and head trainer Shingo Inoue gives the camp's view: "How many more fights? It's fine to wrap up soon. Better to stop cleanly at a good moment, while he's still a legend."

27 July 2026 — media session in Zama, Kanagawa (Daily Sports / Nikkei) Inoue confirms he will not fight at all in 2026: "For me the best would have been to fight in October and then have the big one in February, but there are various circumstances and it can't be done." He is targeting around February 2027, with two options: WBA bantamweight super champion Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez, or a move up to featherweight. "The rest depends on what Bam does… I'm not fixated on Bam — if the timing drags out I'll stop clinging to Bam and go my own way."
