Report

Result: both Japanese fighters won — Asakura by head kick, Tsuruya by first-round choke

At UFC Fight Night: Nurmagomedov vs. Song, held on 29 August 2026 at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center, both Japanese fighters on the card finished their opponents.

  • Kai Asakura knocked out Aoriqileng at 0:34 of round 2 (left high kick, then punches)
  • Rei Tsuruya submitted Kevin Borjas at 4:14 of round 1 (rear-naked choke)

In the main event, Song Yadong knocked out Umar Nurmagomedov with a right uppercut at 1:48 of round 2.

Kai Asakura — thirty-four seconds

The first round was competitive. The second was not. Asakura landed a left high kick flush, hurt Aoriqileng, and followed with an uppercut and a burst of punches until the referee stepped in — 34 seconds in.

It is his second straight finish since returning to bantamweight, after a first-round knockout of Cameron Smotherman in May 2026, and moves his UFC record from 1-2 to 2-2. Asakura entered the UFC in unusual fashion: his debut was a flyweight title shot against Alexandre Pantoja in December 2024, which he lost by submission.

Rei Tsuruya — he took the back, and that was that

Tsuruya took Borjas down inside the first minute and held top position. When Borjas worked back to his feet, Tsuruya immediately took his back and put him down again, then waited patiently for the opening and closed the rear-naked choke at 4:14.

It is his second first-round submission in three months, after tapping Luis Gurule at UFC Macau in May. He is 24 and still the youngest flyweight on the UFC roster.

What the night actually means

Two Japanese fighters on one UFC card, two wins, two finishes — that is a rare night. Neither, though, was a ranked bout. What comes next is what decides whether these two wins matter.
