Biography

Rolando "Rolly" Romero built his brand on trash talk long before his record backed it up, turning pro in Las Vegas in 2016 as an unheralded prospect with heavy hands and heavier bravado. He won an interim WBA lightweight title in 2020, then talked his way into a 2022 showdown with pound-for-pound star Gervonta Davis -- and was stopped in the sixth round, a public humbling. Romero rebuilt at 140 lbs, taking a vacant WBA super lightweight title from Ismael Barroso in 2023, only for Isaac Cruz to strip it from him in 2024. Moving up again, he shocked the sport in May 2025, flooring heavy favorite Ryan Garcia in round two and outworking him for a clear decision to claim the WBA welterweight title in Times Square. When Jaron Ennis vacated the belt for 154 lbs, Romero was elevated to full "Super" champion. He now makes his first defense against two-division champion Teofimo Lopez -- come-forward power versus a slick southpaw resetting his career after a lopsided loss to Shakur Stevenson.
