Biography
Shinya Aoki is a Japanese submission legend and one of the most decorated grapplers in MMA history. Nicknamed "Tobikan Judan," he blends judo, BJJ and a deep leg-lock system into a relentless flying-submission game, and competes for ONE Championship while also wrestling for DDT Pro-Wrestling.
In the DREAM era he beat the likes of Eddie Alvarez (heel hook) and Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante, and is infamous for the brutal hammerlock arm-break of Mizuto Hirota on New Year's Eve 2009. He has long held lightweight titles across major promotions.
Still active in his 40s, he submitted Eduard Folayang with an armbar at ONE 172 (March 2025), then suffered a TKO loss to Hiroyuki Tetsuka at ONE 173 in Tokyo (November 2025). Now 49-12, Aoki remains a beloved grappling icon of Japanese MMA.
