Biography
Teofimo Lopez was born July 30, 1997, in Brooklyn to Honduran parents and represented Honduras at the 2016 Rio Olympics before turning pro. He announced himself by blasting out Richard Commey for the IBF lightweight title in December 2019, then delivered the win of his career in October 2020, out-boxing Vasiliy Lomachenko to unify the WBA, IBF, WBO, and Ring belts — a result widely described as making him the undisputed lightweight champion, and the youngest man ever to hold that status.
A stunning split-decision loss to George Kambosos Jr. in November 2021 cost him everything, but Lopez rebuilt at 140 lbs, dethroning Josh Taylor for the WBO light-welterweight crown in June 2023 and defending it three times. A lopsided unanimous-decision loss to Shakur Stevenson in January 2026 cost him that belt as well.
Now, having launched his own promotional venture, Takeover Promotions, "The Takeover" is jumping straight to welterweight to challenge Rolando "Rolly" Romero for the WBA world title on August 22, 2026, in Las Vegas — a bid to become a champion in three different weight classes.
